The Christian Church in Kansas is blessed with Disciples Center at Tawakoni as our regional camp and conference center. These 170+ acres provide a home for the summer camp program, and are a favorite location for groups to meet throughout the year: church retreats, family reunions, student groups, training events, quilting groups and more. With ample space for expansion, our 85 congregations are blessed to know that both spiritual renewal and leadership development are priorities.
We want to increase the support of the camp and invite others into participation. To do this, we will ask families to make a contribution of $40, about what would be spent on a dinner out. The first opportunity will be during the KCYF Spring Retreat when youth will make calls, inviting gifts to support the camp. The youth callers will be happy to share their love for the camp as they visit with donors.
How much is needed? The operating budget for 2016 is, as could be expected, pretty tight. We hope to raise $5,000 in this campaign for the operating budget; additional funds will be used for upcoming capital improvements, including repairing and modernizing the 1960s-era swimming pool. The 50-year-old pump and filtration system is now a constant challenge and the decking is cracked. With modern updates we will save significant operational costs.
