Rethinking Justice Workshop
“What does the LORD require of you? To do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
– Micah 6:8
In Matthew 23:23, we read, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.”
As Disciples of Christ, we have learned practices of compassion and faith, but justice practices are a little harder. It takes more people to make an impact because of the level at which the issues need to be addressed.
Five people from West Side Christian Church, Topeka, attended the Rethinking Justice workshop on Tuesday, March 5, where they learned about Topeka JUMP (Justice and Unity Ministry Project).
JUMP brings together people from various faith backgrounds to discover what we agree upon regarding God’s vision for justice in the world. These serious issues, which might include things like homelessness, violence, payday lending, or affordable housing, are then researched so a solution can be found.
Finally, all the churches that are part of JUMP gather at a Nehemiah Assembly, where they witness conversations with key Kansas leaders to determine what can be done to address the issues. JUMP then monitors and follows up with Shawnee County leaders to monitor progress.
