Disciples Men in 2018

Thoughts from your Regional Minister
By: Ken Marston, Regional Minister
Published in February 2018 Kansas Messenger

In 2018, as we continue the Vision Process in our region, new things are happening. Our biennial regional assembly will be anything but traditional—see 2018 Congregational Escape article. Through a new ministry initiative Congregational Enhancement Grants, the region will partner with congregations for new ministries. With a grant from the Kansas Leadership Center, we will send 40 people, ministers and church leaders, for intensive leadership training.

Kansas Disciples Men are dreaming new dreams and seeking to do new things with a focus on mission in 2018. Instead of the traditional men’s retreat, normally held in September, the cabinet will do three things:

  1. Forge new relationships with local congregations by going to them instead of planning an “y’all come” event
  2. Partner with local men’s groups to host Pancake Breakfasts/Cooking for Mission, to raise money to combat hunger
  3. Sponsor two mission trips beyond Kansas, where men can put their faith into action.

The first Pancake Breakfast/Cooking for Mission will be from 9 am to noon on Saturday, April 28, at Belmont Blvd. Christian Church in Salina. Proceeds will be split between a local hunger ministry and the General Conference of Disciples Men, for childhood hunger programs in the US and Canada.

Mission trip plans aren’t ready for publication yet; watch for news of work trips to the Gulf Coast to help with Hurricane Harvey relief and another trip, perhaps to Missouri.

This is only the beginning! As we live into a new future, some things we try will work and some won’t; in all of them we are seeking God’s path for our congregations together—that is, for our regional church. What is God calling us to be and do as the Christian Church in Kansas (Disciples of Christ)? Let’s find out!

Hey men! You won’t want to miss the Disciples Men’s Retreat Sept. 29-30.

Two dynamic speakers, Todd Adams, Pension Fund, and Jesse Jackson Jr. of East 6th Street Christian Church, Oklahoma City, will help us explore Wrestling with an Old Foe

Racial strife has raised its ugly head again. While there has been great progress since the 1950s, there is still much work to be done if we are to be the nation our founders envisioned and the faith community Christ called us to be.

In this work of racial justice, men of faith need to learn how to say “Enough!” to hurtful, bigoted speech, and acts of racially motivated violence.

Come! Be a part of this important conversation during this year’s retreat!

Amazing Odyssey Adventure II

Coming August 11-12
The Disciples Center at Tawakoni

Hey men! The Amazing Odyssey Adventure II is the third retreat of the Disciples Men Odyssey Project. This retreat casts the vision of the Odyssey Project and invites men 10 years and older to begin the life-long journey of growing up to reflect Christ-like character.

While originally conceived as a partnership journey for teen boys and their father figures, the vision for the Odyssey Project has grown to include any man who is tired of going through the motions of being a follower of Jesus. It is about learning to live a disciplined life that helps a man become what God created men to be: Respectful, Responsible, Reliable, Faithful, Compassionate, Generous, Humble, and Self-controlled.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, participants will explore the vision of the Odyssey Project, make Spirit Bags in which to keep memory objects that mark their spiritual growth, experience exercises in the Daily Rule of Life Guide (included), and experience a guided session of a Monthly Men’s Support and Accountability meeting, which includes extended physical activity and sharing that will help participants assess their growth in reflecting Christ-like character. We will close with worship around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Register and pay online below or download registration form and mail with payment to the Topeka Regional Office.  Credit card payments and gifts to the region, whether online, by phone or by other means, appear on your credit card statement as some version of “SST*CHRISTIANCHUR840559 MOUNT VERNON OH.”

Disciples Men’s Amazing Odyssey Adventure

In 2015, Kansas Disciples Men launched a new initiative that invites men of all ages, especially teens and their father figures, to grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ by developing Christ-like character. The journey began with a retreat at Disciples Center at Tawakoni where 19 men gathered to explore Jesus’ teaching that he is “the Bread of Life,” and to consider what it means to follow the one who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” that God envisioned from the beginning of creation.

On August 12-13, we offer a new opportunity to join this journey. The Disciples Men’s Amazing Odyssey Adventure is the second retreat for any man who seeks to develop Christ-like character. Loosely based on the television show “The Amazing Race”, participants team up to race around the campground and explore Biblical passages on developing Christ-like qualities of being reliable, responsible, faithful, and compassionate men of God.

Disciple Men Sessions 2016

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me . . . it was you who formed my inward parts;  you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
~Psalm 139: 1 & 13.

The above scripture makes it clear that God is an intimate God.  Our God KNOWS us and “knit us together. . .”  This is powerful language. Isaiah uses similar language: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;  I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43: 1b.

Sessions 2016 will gather at Texas Christian University on July 8-10, 2016 around the Theme: You Are Called by Name. Disciples Men from across the United States and Canada will be coming to experience God’s presence with us and God Calling us by Name to be leaders of God’s Church.

Come experience the southern hospitality of the Texas Christian University.  Speakers for the weekend include: Todd Adams, Newell Williams, Alvin Jackson, and Rita Nakashima Brock.  Come HANG YOUR HAT IN FORT WORTH at Sessions 2016.
